The DCF Foundational Truths

Each year, people ask the DCF to share our members’ thoughts on numerous issues—some directly related to education, others not so much. This year’s school board election is no different.

However, what is different is the number of hypotheticals and issues solely related to political agendas. The DCF will not participate in political discussions that disrupt truth in the classroom and honesty in education. The members of the DCF are rational, practical, highly educated, and unwilling to be part of what has become a political arena.

Educating young people is serious business that requires professionals with a strong pedagogical foundation; the DCF always has, and will continue to focus on the issues that matter to students’ academic growth and well-being in Douglas County Schools. If our schools are to continue to grow and become places where young people consistently thrive, this district must reject the divisive rhetoric of today’s politics and return to focusing on teaching and learning. A focus that frankly, has been lost.

To this end, the members of the DCF have developed a short list of principles that are the guiding framework for discussions regarding this year’s board elections and beyond. We call this list the "Foundational Truths".

Fresh out of the classroom, with over 25 years of teaching experience, gives me a fresh perspective to lead Douglas County Federation. I am excited for staff and students to be back to school - in person. We know that making connections with others makes the school experience better for everyone involved; especially students.

In her September New York Times column, AFT President Randi Weingarten says that going back to school has never looked like it does now. Weingarten explains that because of President Donald Trump’s response to the coronavirus, which has been chaotic, contradictory and inept, and the lack of federal guidance and funding, we’re seeing a patchwork of school reopening plans across the country.

Douglas County School District (DCSD) has committed to “increase stakeholder awareness of all post-graduate opportunities” and “enhance and increase sustainable, quality educational pathway opportunities for all students.” Post-graduation guidance and preparation have become increasingly important as the changing labor market requires more than just high-quality instruction.
